Landkey Village

The Parish Council wishes to provide a page on this website for a listing of businesses based in Landkey. It is hoped that this initiative will help to promote those businesses who trade in our village. If you own or run a Landkey-based business and would like to list it on this website, please provide the name of your business, a short description of what you do and contact details. Further to my blog of 14th November, I can now report that St Paul's Church has achieved the target sum of £18000 + VAT required to restore the Acland Memorial. It is anticipated that work will begin in late January 2015 and will take an estimated two months to complete.

St Paul's Church is raising funds to restore the Acland Memorial which has fallen into a state of disrepair. The Memorial is of particular significance as it is associated with the distinguished Acland family whose roots can be traced to Acland Barton on the outskirts of Landkey as far back as 1155.

The Memorial is located in the Lady Chapel of the church and features effigies of Sir Arthur and Lady Elynor Acland, the dates of whose deaths are recorded as being 1610 and 1645, respectively.

A sum of £18000 is needed to carry out the restoration, £15000 of which has already been raised or pledged. If anyone would like to offer additional assistance with this project, please contact St Paul's at landkeychurch@btinternet.com.

St Paul’s Church clock has recently had a mechanism fitted which will enable it to keep time correctly. It had long been necessary to regularly adjust the clock as its Victorian-era workings failed to maintain the current time and caused it to chime inaccurately, much to the frustration of nearby residents.

We are grateful for the donations which we received to enable the mechanism to be fitted and are also grateful to Chris James for carrying out this work.

The clock was installed by a local company in 1887 to mark the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria. The original manual winding mechanism was later replaced with an electrical rewinding system but the clock was still unable to keep time reliably.

The device which Chris has now installed is a Seasonal Time Controller which regulates the time according the National Time Signal and which will even adjust itself automatically when the time changes in autumn and spring.

We are pleased to report that the clock now keeps perfect time and chimes accurately as well!

At the Parish Council Meeting held on 2nd July 2014 the Local Plan, which was issued by the North Devon District Council on 26th June, was discussed.

The proposed Plan, which will run until 2031, will be out for public comment until August 8th. It contains a section specifically on Landkey and this section largely reflects what the Parish Council submitted. In most respects, therefore, the proposed plan is supported by the Parish Council. This is especially important in the light of efforts by Devonshire Homes to develop a large housing site which is deemed to fall outside the Landkey Development Boundary.
